Raft for a drifter
Ryan,
It looks like you may have guided out of a raft in chile. Is that true? Or have you had any experience with a fishable raft for drifting? I am looking into a raft for a few reasons we could use it for white water when not drifting, we could use it on lakes, and we could haul it to the green when we get the chance. I understand they are more sluggish than a drift boat, but are also safer for a newer guy on the oars. Have you ever rowed one or fished out of one? or do you have any suggestions on brands and set-up. Any info. would be appreciated. I would love a drift boat but can't justify it for 1-2 float trips down the green a year.
Thanks

Fishing from a raft.

I did guide from a cataraft in chile. It was large enough to be comfortable in class IV whitewater. I also rowed rafts through my teenage years. Rafts are not as effective as a driftboat, but are probably more versatile. If you plan on fishing out of a raft make sure it has a frame made specifically for fishing (especially standing). Rafts are a lot more forgiving for beginners. When you hit rocks in a drift boat it can cause damage, where a raft you will just bounce. As far as brands I would suggest looking at the NRS site or catalogs. They carry some good brands as well as their own. They have frames specifically for fishing. Also, get a self bailer, it is definitely worth it. Rafts come in different shapes and sizes, find one that fits your needs.
