2007 year on the green
So as a guide how would you rate the 2007 season as compared to others? It sounds like the Cicadas were awesome this year! We had a great trip in July. With many fish and several nice ones. What techniques did you take the biggest fish on and why do you think that is? How big and what was average for this year? Since you have fish the green for so long what are your overall feelings as far as size and numbers over the last 10-15 years. Have the fish gotten smaller, pickier, do they fight less? Also what section fished the best for you this year? Just a few questions for fun and curiosity. Thanks for the great reports and info. keep it coming.

BIG Flies
Posted by dutchjohn101 on 11/14/2007A big dry on the Green would be anything from a size 4-10. Keep in mind that most of the 4,6, and 8's are tied on long shank streamer hooks. Not on dry fly hooks that are shorter. As for big droppers, probably anything size 12 and above. Worms, eggs, stonefly nymphs, midge larva, and fry are the big droppers that I use. As for big fish on streamers, I would say generally the average size is bigger, but it varies from year to year. Some years are good streamer years and some aren't. I think it depends on the number of sculpin and how many fish actually make it past the fry stage of life.

Big flies and fish
Posted by pstruh on 11/13/2007Thanks for the info. I think it is always intersting to compare a fishery and fishing conditions from year to year. When you say big dry for big fish are you talking 6's and 8's and what kind of big droppers are you talking about? How about streamers? Do you feel like you average larger fish on a good streamer day?

Review of 2007
Posted by dutchjohn101 on 11/07/2007The cicadas were pretty amazing this year. Probably the biggest hatch I've seen for numbers. The cicadas were smaller in size than some years. That pretty much sums up the year, lots of numbers, smaller in size. For numbers, 2007 was a great year. For size, 2007 was a poor year. I would say the average size was 15 to 16 inches. From talking to other guides, I think less fish over 20 inches were caught this year than any other year since I started guiding. 15 years ago it was much easier to catch fish over 20 inches than is has been in the last couple. Even five years ago I probably netted 10 times the amount of 20 inchers as this year. That being said, I thought the rainbows were healthier this year than past years. The browns did not look near as good though. As for catching the bigger fish, they always seem to come on big dry flies or big droppers on long casts (50 feet or more). Getting away from the boat seems to make a big difference in the size that are caught. The fish don't seem to be any pickier than other years. As for fight, it is totally dependent on the fish you catch. If you catch the same fish everyone else does, they don't fight much. If you can catch the fish that don't get caught, they fight reasonably well. The fish here don't fight as hard as fish I've caught on many rivers. They never have fought real hard here. I would say the B section and the first two miles of the C section fish really well. It seems like almost every day down there fish real well. I fished the the top two miles of the C section yesterday and it was still fantastic. Well I hope this answers a few questions, if you have anymore just ask.
